
Cookie Cutter Beginner Applique Class

Do you want to learn hand applique using the freezer paper starch method? Do you want a relaxing, fun day of learning with friends? Bring your vintage or new cookie cutters to class to create a stunning cookie bouquet. (we will have cookie cutters in class if you don't have any) In this beginner class we will cover the basics of hand applique: inner curves, outer curves, points, V's, circles and bias stems. This is a quick/simple project to help you discover the world of freezer paper applique.
Cookie cutters of choice
Background fabric 14x16- I used a light pink check so my cookies would show up
Brown fabric for sticks- 6-inch square ( bring 1 or 2)
Vase fabric- 6X6 inch square print
Tone on tone cream or light yellow 5-inch squares- you will need 6. They can all be the same color or a variety
Cookie frosting 5-inch squares- 6 different strips or prints
Applique thread (cotton or silk) to match fabric colors
1/8 ribbon (optional) to add a bow to each cookie
Feel free to bring a extras of the cookie/frosting fabrics so you can have a variety of choices.
Regular Starch (NOT heavy duty) with small container (aerosol or non -aerosol)
Roxanne's Glue Baste It- I use a Dritz Longarm Micro-Tip applicator to dispense glue
Stiletto- one with a good sharp metal point that feels comfortable to you
Brush- 1/4 in. angled paint brush from Michaels/Hobby Lobby
Small craft iron- Clover wedge iron if you own one. (discontinued) or similar iron
Cheri's Cool Tool – MUST have for class
Flower head pins or similar
Scissors For fabric: I prefer serrated – Kai purple handle or Karen Kay Buckley middle size - light
blue handle or similar
Scissors For paper: curved and straight scissors in a variety of sizes. (I use Kai 4 inch straight
and curved, and Kai 5 1/2 curved) or similar
Applique Scissors- straight, sharp tip
Clover 1/4 bias maker (it MUST be the green one-NOT the purple one)
Wool ironing mat (size 12X18 or similar) with scrap of cotton fabric to cover it.
Rotary cutter, small cutting mat (12X14 or similar) and any long ruler (3X18 etc)
1/4 white foam core board - available from Walmart, Michaels or office supply store cut to size
of your project (approx. 14X14)
Parchment paper- roll or pre-cut sheets- you need 1 piece the size of your project
Freezer paper 8 1/2 X 11- Cut-Rite brand.
Ultra-fine sharpie or micron pen- any color
Pencil
Emory board (nail file)
Silicone hot pad or silicone iron pad- keeps your irons from burning tables or falling onto floor
during class
